My artwork consists of hybrid figures (made of sculpture, painting, drawing, collage) that are part human, and part animal, part insect, part shadow. Each work is an expression of the psychological shifts that happen to us, and adaptations we choose, as a result of facing really difficult things. My creatures evolve and grow, they fall apart and pull themselves back together in new ways. They carry on, but now as almost (but not quite) unrecognizable beings who have faced and integrated shadow selves and become more.
Deeply autobiographical, my art references my own experience with a disabling and unsolvable complex chronic illness that has led to reliance on a wheelchair, bed-rest, and other life-altering consequences. Much of my work and practice is shaped by this circumstance; my own ghosts and mobility aids and creatures emerge as part of each figure.
Much of my art practice rests on the foundation of my mixed media collage practice. This is where I generally first explore ideas and materiality through photos, papers, paint and other less traditional supplies on paper. I use collage to create and nuanced creatures that tow the line between chaotic and complex, confusing and dynamic. Later, using these explorations as inspiration, I may create larger oil paintings that blend classical techniques with modern application and tools, or pull out wood-working tools or clay and create iterations of these ideas as larger works.
